Ben Currie clinches the 2023 British Supersport Championship at Donington Park with a round to spare

A dominant Ben Currie continued his remarkable run on the Moto Rapido Racing Ducati Panigale V2 yesterday, securing the 2023 British Supersport title with a victory at Donington Park.

Starting the second race of the weekend from pole, Aussie Ben Currie enjoyed a dream start leading the pack early on. However, he had a minor setback on lap three when he went wide at Foggy Esses, rejoining the race in fourth place.

Unfazed, Currie clawed his way back up the order, overtaking Jamie Perrin (Suzuki) on lap five at Melbourne Loop. Three laps later, he passed Eugene McManus (Triumph) to secure second place behind Luke Stapleford (Kawasaki) heading into the latter half of the 18-lap race.

Lap 12 proved pivotal as Currie executed a move exiting Esses, snatching the lead from Stapleford. The Kawasaki rider fought back but overcooked it at the Loop, allowing Currie to regain the lead and control going into the final stage of the race

Currie skillfully navigated backmarkers in the closing laps, extending his lead and securing a well-deserved victory that saw him crowned him the 2023 British Supersport Champion, much to the elation of the Oxford Products Racing Ducati team.

Talking to Superbike on Sunday Ben said, “We worked hard that first part of the season to keep ourselves in the championship fight, to work our way around the Ducati V2, the team and myself. We’ve made massive steps from the start of the season.

In the last half of the season it seemed a dream, podiums on the bounce, and five wins now. I’m absolutely over the moon. I don’t know what to say really, I can’t believe it.”

But wining the championship wasn’t even on the Australian’s mind during the action, “I was concentrating so hard on winning that race I’d forgotten that I could have won the championship. Now we’re standing here, I’ve got the trick gold helmet, and dreams have become a reality.

Looking back, this being a long time coming, we’ve been grinding for years and years. It hasn’t come easy, we always worked hard and believed we could do this, and didn’t listen to the critics who said I couldn’t do it. But now we’re here and we can celebrate.
