Ceramic Coating for Motorcycles: Is it important?

So many car drivers will have their car ceramic coated before it even leaves the forecourt. However despite the fact motorcycles are far more exposed to the elements, it isn’t a thought. So, is it important?

The answer is yes! It isn’t something that is pushed a much in the world of motorcycle dealers, however it is such an important part of looking after your motorcycle.

Maybe you have an adventure bike, an urban machine, or even your daily commuter that you bought cheap just because you needed transport – hoping to flip it for a profit in a few years time. Whatever your story behind the bike you own, the biggest thing about future selling is the condition it’s kept in during the period of ownership.

Motorcyclists take such pride in looking after their motorcycle and there’s so many brands out there that is their sole business looking after your motorcycle. Ceramic coating for motorcycles is a step so many people overlook. They may say it’s because they don’t intend on keeping it long, maybe it’s a PCP deal. In our opinion, it’s a cost that is worth going ahead with, for the show off you’ll have as a result. Ceramic coating especially from new, will ensure it’s so much easier to maintain your bike and its condition. For this article, we’re going to use Muc-Off as an example. They’re a brand in which their entire business is keeping your motorcycle clean and maintained! Step one: Prepare your surface

Missing this step is the difference between a smooth, silky finish to slightly uneven and not as effective in terms of protection.

Ensure you’re starting with a totally clean base. You can’t just chuck your ceramic coating on after an afternoon ride out to the seaside without cleaning your motorcycle first. As we’re using Muc-Off, their Nano Tech Motorcycle Cleaner is a firm favourite amongst my friends who own motorcycles. This will rid your bike of any unwanted grime before you start the process. Plus, it’s pink!

Make sure your motorcycle is totally dry before you start this process. As the product is so durable, it will help seal any imperfections the motorcycle may have so any corrective work than needs doing is recommended before this process.

Next, you go in with the Muc-Off Surface Preparation Spray. You spray this on and work it into the panel you’re coating. You simply spray on and work in with a microfibre cloth. This will rid your motorcycle of any excess polish/residue used to clean the bike before coating.

Step two: Let’s get ceramic!

So Muc-Off recommend you apply in a cool, dried and well ventilated area. So into the man cave you go if you have one! As with any bottled formula you’ll need to give is a good shake before you apply this onto your bike. They also recommend if you can wear some protective gloves you’ll thank yourself later.

Coat your chosen area to start sparingly across the provided microfibre cloth and Muc-Off recommend you work it in as a cross-hatch pattern (#) and take your time working this in. As with any coating product, don’t try cover everything in one go. Choose one area to focus on and spend a decent amount of time working this in until you’re happy with the finish.

They then say to allow the wet coating to cure for 5 minutes. It’s really important to not leave the product any longer than this. During this time the coated surface will develop a rainbow-like appearance. In this time check that you have covered all areas. Using the provided microfibre cloth, lightly buff the surface using small circular motions to a high gloss, mirror-like finish. Be sure to check the surface in multiple light angles to ensure all the rainbow effect has been removed.

Step three: The longest wait…

Once buffed off, let the coating fully cure for 24 hours in a cool dry place before exposing it to water or the elements. (For best results and adhesion, we do not recommend washing for at least 48 hours after application).

You’re able to top up the application of this product for even longer durability, just simply follow step 2x again. There’s no need to re-prepare the surface on the second application a short while after the first coat.

Muc-Off recommend you top-up every 6-months to keep your bike in pristine condition.
