DIOGO MOREIRA TAKES TITLE STEP WITH TRIUMPH-POWERED PORTUGUESE VICTORY
Diogo Moreira took another step towards 2025 Moto2™ World Championship glory today. He achieved a sensational victory in the 21-lap Moto2 Portuguese Grand Prix. The Brazilian crossed the line ahead of early race leader Collin Veijer and rookie David Alonso.
Moreira stormed to a superb pole position in Saturday’s qualifying session.
This gave him a clear run down the hill into turn one. Making a strong getaway, the number 10 Triumph-powered machine burst towards the opening corner. He maintained the lead on the opening lap as Veijer and Jake Dixon settled in behind.
Eager to push on, it was Veijer who made an early pass. He clinched the lead from Moreira on lap four with a neat move on the brakes into the tricky turn one. With a clear track ahead of him, the Red Bull rider pushed on. He opened the gap to his rival to half a second and managed the gap till the end.
However, the Dutchman extracted everything from his Triumph 765cc triple engine, as seen on the Street Triple 765 RS.
This allowed the series leader to close back in and launch a late attack to reclaim the lead at Turn 11. From there, Moreira didn’t look back. He held on to take victory ahead of maiden Moto2 podium finisher Veijer and Alonso. Alonso battled his way through the pack to claim the final podium spot after picking off Jake Dixon in the early stages.
It was a tricky outing for Manuel Gonzalez. After a yellow flag cancelled his final flying lap in qualifying, he posted the fastest overall sector one and would qualify eighth. A penalty for Daniel Muñoz promoted him one place to seventh for lights out.
The IntactGP rider made a clean start, staying out of trouble and maintaining his seventh place.
With Moreira up the road, Gonzalez wasted no time in moving forward. He passed Celestino Vietti and set his sights on the top five. However, a big rear-end slide on the exit of the turn five hairpin dropped him back behind the Italian. It allowed Arón Canet to muscle his way through.
Regaining composure, he pushed on but was unable to work his way back towards the top five. He crossed the line in sixth behind the two Fantic riders of Canet and Barry Baltus.
Triumph Racing would like to congratulate Daniel Holgado on his Rookie of the Year achievements. They also congratulate Canet, Baltus, and the Fantic Racing team, who secured victory in the Teams’ standings.
Diogo Moreira’s victory means the Italtrans rider sits 24 points clear at the top of the standings.
As the Moto2 World Championship comes to its conclusion next weekend (14-16 November). The Motul Grand Prix of the Valencian Community will be the series’ first visit to the Circuit Ricardo Tormo since 2023. This is after the 2024 finale was moved to Catalunya.
