NEVER STOP: THE 2026 KTM 990 RC R RACES ONTO THE STREETS

What is KTM’s idea behind the KTM 990 RC R?

The KTM 990 RC R is the long-awaited NextGen Supersport motorcycle. That will plug a gap in KTM’s otherwise comprehensive product portfolio. The KTM 990 RC R bends the rules of the extreme ergonomics and race-specific features. Normally found on sport models, make it the ideal foil for racing fans who want a viable motorcycle for the street and everyday use.

Based on feedback at dealers and more sources. Many KTM customers and fans have been hankering for a bike like the KTM 990 RC R for some time. It is a natural extension of the smaller single cylinder RC range. That contains the KTM RC 125, KTM RC 200 and KTM RC 390. The KTM 990 RC R is also clearly a result of the learnings…

Through experience and success, KTM have gained at the highest level of FIM Grand Prix racing in MotoGP™. 2017, Moto2™ and Moto3™ since 2012.

Why is it called the KTM 990 RC R?

The KTM 990 RC R is the next natural notch in the KTM RC range. It is the fifth model in the segment following the KTM RC smaller cylinder models. As well as the limited edition track homologated KTM RC 8C. The ‘R’ designation marks the motorcycle as a Race delineation. The bike is not a ‘soft’ interpretation of a Supersport product. In true KTM style it carries an extreme READY TO RACE DNA.

The sport emphasis is clear but how does the KTM 990 RC R cater for road use?

Chassis and ergonomics are tilted to Supersport use with a weight distribution of 52.5%-47.5% front and rear. The offset and the steering angle are different. The effect is for a planted, secure and agile handling sensation without overdoing the racing stance. The fairing, bodywork and fuel
tank provide important contact points. Both performance, comfort and to fit a hefty span of different sized riders! This factor is key; along with the fully adjustable suspension, dual-position footrests, clip-ons, ground clearance, wheelbase and seat height. The fairing itself is conceived to
provide copious downforce but also has contrived holes and outlets to help with engine cooling.

The KTM 990 RC R uses the excellent stability and torsional stiffness profile.

Along with a complete with a brand new subframe concept, linkage construction of the swingarm for enhanced mechanical grip. The LC8c is EURO5+ compliant and provides an excellent fuel consumption ratio which also boosts its ecological specs. Last but not least, riders might want to tuck into that ‘racey’ bubble but even if they don’t then they can be kept fully informed about the status of the bike and their journey thanks to the new state-of-the-art 8.8” TFT and Connectivity Unit, optimized interface, switch cubes with
customizable haptic handlebar switches, Ride Modes and offline map navigation system.

The KTM SPORTMOTORCYCLE GMBH Stallhofnerstraße 3, 5230 Mattighofen, Austria T: +43 77 42 / 60 00 F: +43 77 42 / 60 00-303 ktm.com LED headlight is the definition of efficiency ensuring the rider can see enough if he or she needs to call on the four standard ABS Mode options.

STREET ABS is the default Mode that features full Cornering ABS function and keeps everything in check for the safety conscious rider.

  • SPORT ABS is new and allows for more enthusiastic braking behaviour. Allows slight rear wheel lift while keeping Cornering ABS functions active. The electronics package is one of the widest and most comprehensive in the KTM product catalogue. Helping to make the KTM 990 RC R one of the best and safest motorcycles on the road.
  • SUPERMOTO+ ABS is also new! This disables the Cornering ABS functions, as well as removes ABS from the rear wheel. What makes this unique…is it allows slight rear wheel slide/drift while braking into corners. Essentially reduces the rear wheel slide angle to 8 degrees off centre.
  • SUPERMOTO ABS is already well known and caters for riders who wish to have more control themselves. It disables the Cornering ABS functions. As well as removes ABS from the rear wheel. It does not control how far the rear wheel will slide/drift while braking hard into corners. This is completely up to the rider.

Will there still be other versions of the KTM 990 RC R?

The KTM 990 RC R is homologated for the street, and this is the motorcycle’s primary area of use, but KTM know the competitiveness of the platform and will cater for the track only enthusiasts with a KTM 990 RC R TRACK model that will be set to launch in early February 2026.

This model will not be homologated for street use and only features the essentials for track usage. The full details will be released in early February 2026.

When will it be available?

The KTM 990 RC R goes into production in October 2025. It will be available in European dealers first due to geographical proximity to the factory. Countries which are overseas will take longer. As usual, customers will be able to pre-order the motorcycle from their KTM Authorized
Dealer. The KTM 990 RC R TRACK will go into production in February 2026. It will be available very soon after through KTM Authorized Dealers.

KTM 990 RC R engine

What is the output of the KTM 990 RC R LC8c?

OK, so the KTM 990 RC R uses the versatile LC8c engine platform. At 947cc and weighing just 57.2 kg the motor is derived from the KTM 990 DUKE. However, with some important updates. The engine is fully EURO5+ homologated and will make: -130 PS at 9.500 rpm -103Nm at 6.750 rpm

What’s new then?

The way we have mapped the motor essentially. The throttle opens to 100% and has given us the improved performance gain specifically for the KTM 990 RC R. The LC8c has a new airbox integrated into the sub-frame with intakes strategically positioned on each side.

Don’t forget the new stainless-steel exhaust! This contributes to the centralized mass of the motorcycle due to the middle damper and the shorter muffler. Three lambda sensors play a role in the complex configuration of the ignition system. As well as the exhaust gases, to refine the fuel injection process. The form of the tailor-made 8.6 kg exhaust not only helps with the handling sensation of the KTM 990 RC R but also in ergonomics. It is carefully constructed for placement of the catalytic converter and sensors.

KTM 990 RC R chassis

What’s special about the KTM 990 RC R steel frame?

We wanted Supersport character and usability but without the ergonomics that can make sportsbikes a rigorous experience for everyday use. The KTM 990 RC R is still a high-spec and acute product and does not compromise on its sporty genetics. The offset is 33 mm and the slight movement of the forks, while keeping the same angle compared to the KTM 990 DUKE, provides
different steering behavior and that stable, ‘planted’ feel of the front end but with increased response to input for changes of direction.

The steering angle is 25 degrees on each side. The torsional stiffness of the frame is countered by a more flexible swingarm. For a settled and squat feeling under hard acceleration – no matter the road surface – however agility is paramount. The frame itself is made of welded steel tubes. The KTM 990 RC R has the linkage mounting point with a bushing for the screw point of the linkage ‘plate’. Three additional brackets facilitate holding points for the fairing and the crash pads.

What is the subframe made from and what about other features?

The KTM 990 RC R features a newly developed pressure die-cast aluminium subframe, distinct from the design used on the KTM 990 DUKE. On the KTM 990 RC R, the construction is optimized for minimal material use, with the sections connecting the tail to the main fairing reduced to the smallest possible surface area. Here, the external covers double as structural
elements, providing the necessary holding surface. This innovative approach results in a 400 g weight reduction compared to the KTM 990 DUKE’s subframe. Additionally, the KTM 990 RC R subframe integrates air intakes directly into its construction.

Is the swingarm different to the KTM 990 DUKE?

Yes. A lot of R&D has gone into the right balance of flexibility and stiffness of the component specifically for the KTM 990 RC R. Through the early development phase of the project. The goal, and the achievement, was for the right amount of flex to suit varying road surfaces. Without trimming away sensitivity. When the KTM 990 RC R needs to be pushed in a performance context. The linkage system is new and connects to the top part of the swingarm. This addition is a first for the LC8c-equipped line of bikes and underlines the high-performance orientation of the KTM 990 RC R.

What WP Suspension equipment does the bike have and what is the potential for adjustment?

Top level WP APEX Open Cartridge 48 mm diameter fully adjustable forks with 147 mm travel. The stock settings have been made from laps on a track but with consideration to what the rider might need or expect for the road and slightly more ‘give’. The fork has 30 clicks of modification for compression and rebound and for the rider that wants to dial-in a precise window of movement and response. There is a further 3 turns for preload.

The shock is a WP APEX linear gas-assisted spring product, with 134 mm travel, and is fully adjustable with 30 clicks for low speed compression (3 turns for high speed) and 30 for rebound. The WP APEX equipment is first-rate hardware to exploit the full possibilities of the KTM 990 RC R for the two environments for which is has been crafted.

How about the ergonomics?

This has been a large area of the KTM 990 RC R’s development. With a lot of effort using different riders or shapes and sizes. KTM’s R&D department have worked hard for the right blend of a focused riding position with everyday compatibility and comfort. The refinement has come through the holding points and the pressure points of the rider’s connection with the
motorcycle.

The handlebars, footrests and seat (845mm height) have been set for the KTM 990 R base and a Supersport emphasis. The forged, black aluminium rests are adjustable between two positions: ‘STREET’ and ‘TRACK’. STREET sees the two screw-point part slotted into a typical Supersport
stance but without an excessively tight knee angle.

TRACK means a slight change of the second screw point to shift the rest 25 mm back and 17 mm up so the position is sharper and more fixed over the front end for a racing poise. The forged, black aluminium clip-on handlebars are not adjustable but have been fixed in a straighter and more forward location when compared with
other competitors to create that sensation of control and stability but also ease, and freedom from arm-pump.

The fairing will accommodate a wide span of different rider heights while ensuring full possibilities for full movement.

Naturally the fairing has been sculpted with wind tunnel testing and a mountain of data from the Motorsports Department as to the effects and advantages of downforce and stability at speed, under acceleration and in the braking phase. The wings add to this effect. There are also inlets and cutaways to assist cooling and airflow.

The sheet metal 15.7l fuel tank has been developed internally. Every angle and edge has a role in the rider’s integration. Lessons were learned for position changes and rider weight-bearing through the evolution of the other RC models. The KTM 990 RC R’s tank has six touch zones for riding position. Leg lean when cornering, the ‘tuck’ stance when in a straight line. Support for braking and a plinth for the arms while braking and accelerating. The curvature and usefulness of the tank is a centre piece of the KTM 990 RC R experience.

The seat is angled perfectly with the appropriate application of foam for manoeuvrability for the rider. Of course, the KTM 990 RC R has a steering damper. An adjustable version is available as a KTM PowerPart.

KTM 990 RC R electronics

How many Ride Modes?

The KTM 990 RC R spoils the rider. The motorcycle has a full array of programmable specs and possibilities! All to fashion the bike for any types of ride, on any given day. What’s the TFT spec?

The 8.8” horizontal TFT is more than big enough for the task and sets a new standard for size, resolution and quality in the industry. The software has been developed stringently in terms of time and testing and the adaptation and resetting of the desired features on screen is smooth and concise, whatever the preferences. The responsive touchscreen beams out 256k colours, has a light sensor and LED status. It is coated with anti-reflection, anti-fingerprint and anti-glare solutions, shows Trips and has an integrated fog light button.

What about the menus?

We want your eyes on the apex, therefore the menu redesign has been made to display the most apt information in the most readable way and to make interaction swift and easy, whether it’s through the refashioned Switchcube or the touchscreen. Part of the evolution of the KTM 990 RCR set-up is the ability to set a Split Screen (5 size variations) and divide the information relay
through Favorites. Music, map navigation, telemetry and a lap-timer.

Everything is customizable, even the functions of the switchcube paddle buttons and the display output can either be ‘extended’ or ‘reduced’ depending on how much the rider wants to eye. Improvements in the
interface layout: more white spaces and improved colour combination are also noticeable.

Are there more extras?

Aside from the litany of choice through the Ride Modes, the KTM 990 RC R does a whole lot more courtesy of the sensors and tech inherent in hardware like the 6D IMU and ECU as well as the Connectivity Unit and the functionality of the KTMConnect App. Cornering Motorcycle Track Control, Cruise Control and the Adaptive brake light included (the LED unit flashes under hard
braking, although this is not available on U.S. spec models because of homologation).

There is also a Tire pressure monitor – the TPMS – which can be set to a custom value for track riding and with a warning threshold and permits definition of a second wheel set in the event of a tire
change. Map navigation is new as standard. Route planning, active guidance, a map view without guidance all in 5 different languages (English, German, Spanish, French and Italian), with different units and defaults means the KTM 990 RC R won’t get you lost. There are three settings to the ‘Coming home light’ (off, short and long for the duration the light remains when parked),
and Heated Grips activation.

KTM 990 RC R features

How is the KTM 990 RC R‘s stopping power?

Fierce! Thanks to constant collaborators and specialists Brembo (a company used by the entire MotoGP grid) the latest and most premium Brembo HyPure calipers will guarantee maximum force and resistance through the 4-pistons but with greater feel. Lower activation force, less friction and less lever travel is detectable, even at high temperatures. The HyPure gives linear
and consistent braking, a constant pressure point, more power, more modulation and less lever stroke.

The radial hand master cylinder PR16/19-21 allows the regulation of the lever ratio between three stages, to give each customer the best product customization according to their
riding style. The front end of the KTM 990 RC R is fitted with two 320 mm floating Brembo discs while the rear has a 240 mm unit. To outline the classiness of the braking equipment, the components come in a black anodized finish and the Brembo front brake caliper is milled, black and with a trademark red painted Brembo logo.

What tires come with the KTM 990 RC R?

The all-round performance and dependability of Michelin Power Cup 2 tires provide the best grip and durability for both the track and the street. These came out on top from all our tests run in the R&D phases, and all electronic aid and ABS functionality have been calibrated to work best with this tire. Therefore, we strongly recommend buyers to fit the OE tire to ensure best performance is always obtained from the electronic aids.

And wheels?

The wheel rims are adopted from the KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R thanks to the mix of manufacture, design and weight. The dimensions are 17”/3.5 for the front and 17”/5.5 for the rear, which is also adapted for the double-sided swingarm.

The differences with the new handlebar switchcube?

These were made to reduce more delay or friction in changing or activating a particular function. Haptic feedback helps the (normally gloved) rider to confirm whether a button has been pressed or not. The position, shape and location and even the graphics of the buttons have been
optimized. A new 5-way ‘joystick’ assists with navigation through the dashboard menus and features. The Cruise Control switches have been changed and regrouped for each operation, the paddle buttons are customizable and the ride mode button is yet another shortcut route.

Has the headlight been redesigned?

More redeveloped than redesigned. Even though the effect of the LED module seems like the unit has an air intake this is just a reimagining for the styling of the KTM 990 RC R. The LED system pumps out a fantastic range of illumination at high (200m spread) and low beam (80m).

What about the looks?

The outline and the style say everything you need to know about the KTM 990 RC R. It is almost ‘FACTORY EDITION’s status with the orange frame, the powder-coating and anodized finish, sharp trim and the quest for quality in every visual detail. The aerodynamics are perhaps the starkest reminder of the motorcycle’s pedigree. Other minor modifications, such as the deviation
in the windscreen to better direct wind flow and cause less movement to the rider’s head, can be spotted.

The Deflector towards the rear of the fairing is a clear ‘MotoGP part’ and brings further stability in braking performance. The lower fairing wings complement the upper section for the overall aesthetic. The belly fairing is a separate part composed of three sections injected in black for best resistance against scratches and the exhaust system exit. MotoGP ‘looks’ extend into the head fairing and the fishbone effect on the sides. The mirrors are incorporated into the mask with a compact and sporty design, painted in black and with an ‘RC’ logo and there is also an integration for the indicators that are the smallest and most condensed in the KTM range.

How much downforce do the front wings produce?

Firstly, the benefits of adding wings are to provide the rider with increased stability at high speeds and greater control during hard braking. For supersport motorcycles, high downforce values are not as critical as they are for high-powered superbikes. However, we managed to achieve 13 kg
of downforce at a speed of 239 km/h and over 14.4 kg at 252 km/h.

Can the KTM 990 RC R have a pillion?

Yes. The seat has been designed so that the elevated pillion position still permits an effective rider position under acceleration. A cover for the pillion seat is available as a KTM PowerPart.

Does this model come with the normal 2-year manufacturer’s warranty?

No, in fact the KTM 990 RC R comes with the full 4 Year Premium Manufacturer’s Warranty as standard at no additional costs to the customer. For the customer to continue enjoying this extended protection, the customer must ensure their bike is serviced according to the service plan at an authorized KTM dealer. This way, they can ride with confidence, knowing their bike is always in expert hands and covered for the long haul.

So there are KTM PowerParts for the KTM 990 RC R?

This is a KTM right?! There is a full range of almost 100 different KTM PowerParts specifically made for the KTM 990 RC R for styling, accessories, software and race configuration. Varying from titanium Akrapovic slip-on silencers to tinted windshields to protective covers, lowering kits,
alarm systems and tire warmers; there is an immense choice and each part can be easily seen and ordered online or through KTM Authorized dealers depending on the complexity of the part.
