Nürburgring axes Motorcycles at iconic German circuit

It’s been announced by the organisers that in a mission to improve the safety of individuals on-track, they’ve been banned motorcycles on the tourist drive days at the Nordschleife.

The tourist rides are a hugely popular trip for many bikers across Europe and beyond. Many, making the long journey across this beautiful part of Germany to get their machines to the circuit.

Ingo Böder, Nürburgring Managing Director draws attention to the biggest takeaway – safety. He says throughout critical findings becomes some bleak and obvious facts about the circuit in terms of cars and motorcycles using the track simultaneously.

”We have taken a very close look at the situation regarding the simultaneous participation of cars and motorcycles in tourist trips.”

“The different driving dynamics can lead to misunderstandings between two- and four-wheelers,”

“In this case, motorcyclists are particularly at risk because, unlike car drivers, they have no crumple zone. That is why we have decided to strictly separate cars and motorcyclists in the future and to restructure the offer for bikers so that they can enjoy the Nürburgring experience as safely as possible.” says Böder, Nürburgring Managing Director.

Safety in any sport, especially high calibre motorcycle must be paramount. The Nürburgring officials have said there will still be 4x days available throughout the year in which avid bikers will be able to take their 2-wheels to the iconic tarmac.

Understandably, there has been a lot of public feedback. Some, suggests people aren’t happy with just 4x dates more motorcycles. Others, comparing it to competing forms of famous road racing and suggest people understand what they’re signing up for when they sign the waver.
