TOM BOOTH-AMOS AND OLI BAYLISS SECURE POINTS IN FIGHTING ARAGON ROUND
Tom Booth-Amos and Oli Bayliss both delivered strong Sunday rides at MotorLand Aragon. They concluded the weekend with two points finishes for the PTR Triumph Factory Racing team at Round 10 of the FIM Supersport World Championship.
Arriving in northeastern Spain third in the overall standings, it was business as usual for Booth-Amos and his crew. They kicked off the weekend strongly inside the top six before venturing out for a pivotal Superpole session on Friday afternoon.
A strong first run saw the British rider secure provisional pole, but a crash on his second outing halted any further progress.
He ultimately concluded the session in 10th. Teammate Oli Bayliss made the most of a challenging start to the 10th round. He qualified 26th for the weekend’s first race on Saturday despite an early crash in the Superpole session.
Saturday’s race got underway in perfect conditions, but a further challenge was hanging above Booth-Amos. An incident in the morning Warm Up saw him penalised with a long lap penalty. This would make the opening encounter of the weekend a tough one for the PTR Triumph Factory Racing rider.
Making a strong getaway, he maintained his place inside the top 10 before taking his long lap penalty on lap three.
Re-emerging into the fight in 19th, it was all-or-nothing for the number 69 Triumph Street Triple 765. He battled his way through the field to eventually cross the line in 15th.
However, taking the chequered flag in the points, he was demoted one position on the final lap. This was due to making contact with another rider during the race, meaning his surge back to the points went unrewarded.
Teammate Oli Bayliss continued to work on the set-up of his bike, having struggled with feeling throughout the weekend. A tough start saw the Australian slip to 27th, but a determined and resilient ride saw him eventually cross the line in 23rd.
Starting 12th on Sunday, Booth-Amos made a strong start and climbed to the edge of the top 10 by the fifth lap.
He broke into 10th and chased down the leading group. He cut the gap to under half a second with two laps remaining. After passing Alberto Surra for ninth, he seemed set to finish there. But a final-lap crash involving two riders ahead saw him cross the line in seventh, earning valuable points to stay third in the standings.
Bayliss enjoyed a promising Sunday performance. However, the 22-year-old had his work cut out for him from 25th on the grid. Picking off his rivals lap-by-lap, Bayliss quickly found himself on the brink of the points before slicing his way into 15th. With an incident ahead on the final lap, the Australian rider crossed the line in 13th place, adding three valuable points to his season total.
Despite a tougher-than-usual weekend for PTR Triumph Factory Racing, Booth-Amos maintains third in the overall standings. He is four points ahead of Jaume Masia. Bayliss sits 13th, but only 33 points from securing a place inside the top 10. The Lincolnshire-based team lie third in the team standings with Triumph third in the manufacturer classification.
World Supersport action continues in Estoril, Portugal, for the penultimate round of the season on 10-12 October.
